Bulldogs commit 35 turnovers in 60-55 loss to Grant Union

Baker girls basketball coach Tim Smith is looking for an answer to his club's current losing streak.

The frustration continued to build Thursday after the Bulldogs' streak

grew to four straight with a 60-55 loss to Grant Union in the Baker gym.

"I'm puzzled as to what the answer is," Smith said. "That's what I told the girls.

"We had 35 turnovers. If we don't take care of the basketball we're going to struggle to win," he said.

"We're not comfortable in our game situations right now. We're not transferring stuff from practice to game situations."

Thursday's result wouldn't have been as close as it was had the

Bulldogs not scored 23 points in the fourth quarter. Baker managed just

32 points in the other three periods.

The Bulldogs fell behind 5-0 in the first quarter before scoring seven of the final eight points for a 7-6 lead at the break.

Then with the score knotted at 12-12 with 4:33 left in the first half, Grant Union went on a 10-0 run to build a 22-12 lead with 28.9 seconds left in the half.

Baker scored the final two baskets of the half to trail 22-16 at halftime.

The Bulldogs stayed reasonably close until midway through the third period. Two baskets by Aly Ogan pulled the Bulldogs to within 30-24 with 3:30 left in the quarter. Ogan scored all seven of her points in the quarter.

Grant Union rebuilt the lead to 41-26 before Baker again rallied to cut the deficit to 41-32 at the break.

Three baskets from Tara Talbott and one each from Savannah Daly and Haley Adams helped Baker pull within 51-46 with 4:17 left in the game.

Baskets by Whitney Phillips and Dallas Defrees cut the deficit to 54-50 with 1:38 left. A three-pointer by Mackenzie Warner got Baker to within 56-53 with 1:11 left, but the Bulldogs could get no closer.

"Just about the time we get the momentum something happens and we don't keep it," Smith said.

"We just have to keep working. Hopefully things will start to click. We just have to take care of our own business."

Talbott and Warner each scored 10 points to lead the Bulldogs (1-4).

Baker won the junior varsity game 57-14. Maggie Harlow led Baker with 19 points. Mackenzie Srack added 14.
