Emmett rallies to hand Baker non-league loss

Baker let Emmett slip away with a win Thursday in a non-league boys basketball game at Emmett, Idaho.

The Bulldogs snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, falling 52-49 to the Huskies.

"We led the entire game until late in the fourth," said Baker coach Craig Woods.

Baker trailed by three points with less than a minute left when Jesse

Brown hit a basket and was fouled. Brown missed the free throw and

Emmett grabbed the rebound. Baker then fouled the Huskies who made both

free throws.

Then, with 10 seconds left, Baker missed the shot that could have tied

the game. Time ran out before the Bulldogs could mount another threat.

"We missed a wide open shot," Woods said. "Our shots just were not falling.

"The game was ugly from the start. We had a little run in the fourth quarter where we never really got into a flow.

"We had too many turnovers - 23 to their 19 - and many of them were uncharacteristic of how we play."

Baker jumped out to an 11-0 lead to start the game, and led 15-7 at the break. The Bulldogs maintained their lead, taking a 32-24 edge into the halftime locker room.

"In the first half we were very solid defensively," Woods said. "Then we came unraveled."

Dekker Smith started off hot, scoring nine of his 12 points in the first quarter.

Baker managed just six points - four by Brown and two by Walker Kaseberg - in the fourth period.

Woods said the game was another learning experience for the Bulldogs. But, he said, he's tired of learning experiences.

"If we're going to be a top- level team we've got to be more consistent," Woods said.

"We've got to get that killer instinct and start putting people away."

Baker can start that trend Saturday when the Bulldogs host Mac-Hi in a Greater Oregon League contest at approximately 7:30 p.m.
