Bulldogs roll over Mac-Hi to run league record to 3-0

Baker battled sickness, injuries and Mac-Hi

Saturday before finishing the evening with a 57-24 win. The win keeps

the Bulldogs perfect at 3-0 in the Greater Oregon League girls

basketball race.

"It was a good, solid win," said Baker coach Tim Smith.

"These are the kind of games that worry you as a coach," he said. "You

know you are the better team, but you have to come out ready to go."

Baker was without Maggie Harlow, who was on crutches nursing an injured

ankle, and Morgan Ward, who was ill. Savannah Daly played despite being

ill before the game. And, Mackenzie Warner became ill at halftime, and

played sparingly in the second half.

"We're battling sickness," Smith said. "It was a gutsy performance tonight. I really appreciated the way the girls responded. We answered the call. And, when Mac-Hi wanted to get physical, we stepped up and defended our house. Now, we just have to get healthy."

Warner looked anything but ill in the first quarter, bombing home a pair of three-point baskets to help Baker take a 16-8 lead after one period. Tara Talbott added four points in the quarter.

Talbott and Kristen Hoopes dominated inside in the second quarter as the Bulldogs built their cushion to 29-10 at halftime.

Then, two minutes into the third quarter, Talbott and Mac-Hi's Noel Shannon tussled for a loose ball. Talbott was called for an intentional foul on the play, and Shannon a technical foul for retaliating.

After Shannon made 1 of 2 free throws, Baker went on an 11-0 run to close the door on the Pioneers. Daly, playing for Warner, took the lead with a pair of baskets.

Daly, who led the Bulldogs balanced attack with nine points, scored all of her points after halftime. And, with two forwards out of action, Smith called up Tori Brown from the junior varsity. Brown stepped in and added four points in the fourth quarter.

"It just shows that when we need to, we can go 10 deep," Smith said.

Baker hosts Ontario Tuesday at 6 p.m. in its next GOL action. The Bulldogs then travel to La Grande Friday.
