‘Gutsy’ girls beat illness, Ontario

Nathan L.

That's the way Baker girls basketball coach Tim Smith said his Bulldogs

played Tuesday in a 45-30 Greater Oregon League victory over Ontario at

BHS. The win improves Baker's league record to 4-0.

"It was a gutsy performance," Smith said. "We didn't play that well. We

saw some of the effects of the sickness we've been battling.

"We came out flat. But we can chalk it up to the fact that we aren't 100 percent healthy."

Baker led just 26-20 with 45.8 seconds left in the third period. That's

when Haley Adams and Morgan Ward hit back-to-back three-point baskets

to send the Bulldogs into the final eight minutes leading 32-21.

"Those three-point baskets by Haley and Morgan gave us momentum going into the fourth quarter," Smith said.

"We talked about what we have to do to finish. We have to maintain our momentum. We have to take every game as some kind of challenge."

Baker fell behind 6-2 in the first quarter before rallying to knot the score at 6-6 with 4:07 left in the quarter.

At that point all of Baker's points came from the free throw line. The Bulldogs did not get their first field goal until Dallas Defrees scored with 3:28 left in the period.

Baker led 10-6 at the break.

The Bulldogs then scored the first six points of the second quarter to complete a 14-0 run for a 16-6 cushion with 3:25 left in the first half.

Baker led 21-10 at halftime. The Bulldogs were just 5-of-23 from the field in the first half, but were a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Ontario finished the half 4-of-13 from the field and 2-of-3 from the line.

Ontario rallied to pull within 26-20 with 45.8 seconds left in the third quarter. Then Adams and Ward connected on their "threes," Ward's coming with just five seconds left in the period.

Whitney Phillips led a balanced Baker offense with 11 points. Tara Talbott added 10.

Baker travels to La Grande Friday.
