Bulldog defense shuts down La Grande in 46-25 GOL girls contest

Baker dominated from start to finish at La

Grande Friday, running its Greater Oregon League girls basketball

record to 5-0 with a 46-25 thumping of the Tigers.

Despite scoring just three points in the fourth quarter Baker was never threatened.

Baker opened the game scoring seven unanswered points, including three

layins in a span of 20 seconds. After Whitney Phillips broke the

scoring ice with a free throw, Mackenzie Warner sandwiched two layins

around another by Dallas Defrees for a quick 7-0 Baker lead.

Warner and Defrees each tallied six points, and Tara Talbott four, as Baker stormed to a 17-3 lead after one quarter.

Two more Defrees baskets, three points from Talbott, and another Warner hoop sparked a 9-0 run early in the second period that boosted Baker's lead to 26-5.

Baker led 33-13 at halftime.

Baker's defense also was a key. La Grande's top two scorers, Brittani Good and JoHanna Pettey, entered the game scoring a combined 27 points a game. Baker held the Tiger duo scoreless in the first half, and limited the two teammates to just six points in the game.

Warner and Phillips each scored four points in the third period, and the Baker defense limited La Grande to five total points, as the Bulldogs led 43-18 at the break.

Baker stayed on 43 points until 23 seconds remained in the game. Kristen Hoopes' free throw ended the drought. Ashley Shively added a basket late in the quarter.

Warner led Baker with 12 points. Talbott added 11, and Defrees 10.

Baker (12-6 overall), on a nine-game winning streak, travels to Nyssa for a non-league game Tuesday.
