Baker gym gets new flag

Trio of local businesses donate flag

A patriotic addition to the Baker High School gymnasium was unveiled

Friday before the Baker boys and girls basketball games with Mac-Hi.

A new, and very large, American flag was unveiled from the rafters

above center court in the gym. The 12-by-18-foot flag was purchased

from Morgan Flags at a price of $5,000.

The flag, and all installation costs, were donated to BHS by Northwest

Trenching Inc., Baker Vision Clinic and Thatcher's Ace Hardware.

"It's taken a while to get it done," said Dale Curtis, Baker JV boys basketball coach and owner of Northwest Trenching Inc.

"The three local businesses bought the flag," said Mike Sullivan, BHS athletic director. "Not one penny of district money was used for the project."

The flag is encased in a cover attached to the center rafter in the gym. It is lowered by remote control as the National Anthem is performed, then retracted back into the cover afterwards.

"Owners of the three businesses saw most of the schools in Idaho had this kind of setup when we played over there," said Baker boys coach Craig Woods.

"As far as we know Baker is the first school in Oregon to have this kind of setup."
