Baker tennis shines at TVCC meet

Baker tennis players brought home eight awards Saturday at the two-day Treasure Valley Community College tournament in Ontario.

The Bulldogs brought home one championship, two second-place awards, and five consolation awards. The Baker girls finished second to Parma in the team standings.

"It was a good experience for everbody," said Baker coach George Keister.

"We had some people who did pretty well."

Play was divided into No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles divisions, and the same for doubles play in both boys and girls.

Helen Galiszewski earned Baker's individual championship, defeating three opponents in straight sets.

"Helen really played tough," Keister said. "She just keeps working at it. She did well."

Gus Hansen, and the doubles teams of Trent Howard and Jordan Curtis and Anna Clarke and Miranda McBroom brought home second-place honors.

Hansen, competing in the No. 2 singles, won two straight matches before losing the title match.

"Gus plays No. 3 singles for us but I stepped him up a level today," Keister said. "He has the potential to upset some people before he's done."

Howard and Curtis, in the No. 2 doubles, did likewise. They pushed the title match to three sets before falling.

Clarke and McBroom, freshmen playing in the No. 3 doubles, won their first two matches before dropping the title match.

Courtney Petry, Nathan Eiselein, Dan Sizer, Lily Bass and Ellen Jampolsky, and Kim Countryman and Julie Tipton all won consolation titles. Sizer defeated teammate Robert Schmeits for his title.

"Dan Sizer and Robert Schmeits are just coming on. They're just getting their stride," Keister said.

Baker travels to Vale Tuesday. The Bulldogs play their first home match Friday when they host Weiser.
