Baker baseball splits with La Grande

By Gerry Steele / The Baker City Herald

Baker saw its 10-game winning streak snapped in the first game of Greater Oregon baseball doubelehader at La Grande Friday.

The host Tigers handed Baker a 9-2 loss in that game before Baker rebounded to win the second game 10-7.

"We just did not play solid baseball," said Baker coach Dan Blankenship of the first-game loss.

"You're not going to win many games that way."

Baker committed five errors and issued eight walks in the game. The Bulldogs also managed just four hits against La Grande's Josh Yundt.

"We did not swing the bats very well," Blankenship said. "We were very tentative and I don't know why. We took too many strikes. We struck out nine times, and about half of those were looking."

Baker took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Derrick Blankenship doubled home Cole Brown who had singled.

Baker didn't score again until the sixth when Ty Everson scored on Dekker Smith's sacrifice fly.

In Game 2, Baker broke a 7-7 tie with three runs in the sixth inning.

Smith singled and scored on a double by Jordan Harlow. Then, after Trace Richardson reached base on a fielder's choice, Grant Marcum singled home both runners.

Derek Blankenship picked up the win in relief of Everson. Blankenship threw shutout ball the final three innings, striking out seven along the way.

Baker finished the game with 13 hits.

"We swung the bats much better," Coach Blankenship said.

Baker scored single runs in the first and second innings on RBI singles by Blankenship and Brown. The Bulldogs added two runs in the fourth on sacrifice flies by Richardson and Everson.

Then, trailing 7-4, the Bulldogs scored three times in the fifth. Smith doubled and scored on a Harlow single. Will Barr was hit by a pitch before Everson plated both runners with another single.

Baker (3-1 in the GOL and 11-2 overall) travels to Emmett, Idaho, Tuesday for a single game. The Bulldogs then host Ontario in a GOL doubleheader at the Baker Sports Complex on Friday.
