Baker soccer girls lose to Ontario

By Gerry Steele, The Baker City Herald

Ontario scored three first-half goals and made them stand up on the way to defeating Baker 3-0 in a Special District 7 girls soccer match Thursday at the Baker Sports Complex.

"Our goalie let two of those goals go right through her legs," said Baker coach DeeDee Clarke.

On the first, Ontario's Hailee Turner broke away from the Baker defense and went in one-on-one with keeper Laura Wilson. Turner scored from in front of the net.

Crystal Lopez scored Ontario's second goal on a penalty kikc when Baker was whistled for a penalty in the penalty box.

Liz Cacho tallied the third goal after a scramble in front of the net.

Baker had several shots in the first half, but couldn't find the net. Then, in the second half, Baker's offense went silent.

"We just aren't finishing up front right now," Clarke said. "Then in the second half we just weren't as sharp."

Clarke said she wants to keep Robbie Langrell, Baker's most experienced player, on the front line.

"We need to keep Robbie up front. But every time we have trouble in the back she wants to go back. She's getting better at staying up," Clarke said.

The Baker coach said the Bulldogs' youth contnues to be both a positive and a negative.

"We're young, but we're improving every game," she said. "We're not getting blown away, but we're gaining experience in the first half of our season."

Rachel Streifel took over in the Baker net in the second half and shut Ontario down.

"Rachel played really well in goal," Clarke said.

Streifel also scored three goals, and Mrissa Ermovick two, in Baker's 6-5 loss in the junior varsity match.

Baker hosts Riverside at 1 p.m. Saturday.
