Baker girls lose to Tigers

By Gerry Steele / The Baker City Herald

Baker came out of the gate slowly against La Grande Friday, and ended up losing a 56-26 Greater Oregon League girls basketball game at BHS.

La Grande led 37-11 at halftime, and Baker could never catch up in a night when the Bulldogs wore white and pink uniforms to raise funding in the battle for breast cancer awareness.

"It was a tail of two halves, again," said Baker coach Tim Smith.

"We just had inconsistent play to start the game."

Smith said the Bulldogs received good play from Marley Robb off the bench, and Baker played better after halftime.

"I was pleased with the way we played in the second half," Smith said. "It was not what I'd like to see, but it was better than the first half."

La Grande's Denise Comfort came off the bench to score seven points in the first quarter as the Tigers built a 17-1 cushion with three minutes left in the quarter.

Baker didn't get its first field goal until Michelle Birkmaier scored with 2:23 left in the period.

La Grande led 23-5 at the break.

Tonya Alexander then tallied 10 points in the second quarter as La Grande expanded its lead.

Robb led Baker with seven points. Birkmaier added five.

Baker (2-5 in the GOL) travels to Ontario Tuesday and Mac-Hi Friday to close out their regular season.
