Badgers, Imbler win girls semifinals

Powder Valley and Imbler earned berths in the District 7-1A girls basketball championship game Friday with semi-final wins at Baker High School.

Powder Valley upset second seed Pine-Eagle 53-50, and Imbler stopped Wallowa 42-34.

Powder's Katie Hamann hit two free throws with 6 seconds left in the game to break a 49-49 tie and give the Badgers the lead for good.

Pine-Eagle's Chelsie Gulick had a chance to tie the game again seconds later, but hit just 1-of-2 free throws to leave Powder Valley up 51-50.

Hamann was fouled at the buzzer and added two bonus three throws for the final margin.

Baskets by Kate Jones, Ali Abrego and Kelsie White gave Powder Valley an early 6-1 lead in the first quarter.

But baskets by Gulick and Brianna Thatcher helped Pine-Eagle regain a 7-6 lead midway through the quarter.

The lead continued to seesaw with Powder taking a 10-9 lead at the break.

The pattern continued through most of the second quarter before Pine-Eagle made a late push.

With the game tied at 21-21 with 2:36 left in the half, the Spartans scored the final seven points of the half.

Brianna Thatcher had five of those points, and Jamie Butler two.

Another basket by Thatcher, and two Gulick free throws, gave Pine-Eagle a 32-21 lead 30 seconds into the second half.

Then Powder Valley fought back.

Hamann and White each scored six points, and Britni Bobo two, as the Badgers cut the deficit to 40-37 entering the fourth quarter.

Powder Valley eventually pulled back into a tie at 43-43 on another Jones basket with 3:49 left in the game.

The teams tied twice more in the period before Hamann's late-game heroics.

Hamann led Powder Valley with 16 points. White added 12, and Jones 11. Abrego added nine rebounds and five assists.

Brianna Thatcher led Pine-Eagle with 27 points and seven rebounds. Gulick added 10 points.

Imbler 42, Wallowa 34

Top-seeded Imbler took the lead for good midway through the third period and pulled away for the win.

With the score tied 20-20 with 4:23 left in the quarter, the Panthers' Jessica Bingaman hit a jumper to give Imbler the lead for good.

Bingaman led Imbler with 11 points and eight rebounds. Malia Mills added 10 points.

Skylar Waters and Kuulei Delatori each scored eight points to top Wallowa.
