NORTH POWDER - Powder Valley took a big lead but then almost let Sherman take the game away Tuesday in the first round of the Class 1A state boys basketball playoffs.

Powder Valley built its lead to as many as 24 points, but let Sherman battle back to within one point before pulling out a 76-67 victory.

"That was scary," said Powder Valley coach Kyle Dixon.

"They came out after halftime and went to a 1-2-2 zone like we play and

we went through a spell where we didn't take care of the ball. That

killed us."

Dixon said the Badgers committed 35 turnovers.

"Thirty-five turnovers. That's all I've got to say about that," he said.

Powder Valley trailed 18-17 after one quarter, then rolled to a 45-30 lead at halftime.

Sherman outscored the Badgers 21-11 in the third period to trail just 56-51 entering the final eight minutes.

Powder Valley then held the Huskies off, outscoring them 20-16 in the

fourth quarter to advance to the second round against Crane.

"We just need to go to Crane and play four quarters instead of two or three like we did tonight," Dixon said.

Peter Colton led Powder Valley with 25 points. Trenton Dixon added 24.

Scot Stroud led four Huskies in double figures with 19 points.

Dixon said it was not yet decided whether the Badgers would play at

Crane Friday or Saturday in a second-round game. The winner will

advance to next week's state tournament at Baker High School.

The original OSAA schedule has the second round of the boys playoffs

set for Friday. But, Dixon said, if the Powder Valley girls defeat

Dufur this evening at North Powder, they too would travel to Crane for

the second round. If that happens there would be a doubleheader on
