Dennis wins 1A mat title

PORTLAND - Pine-Eagle's Kyle Dennis claimed the Class 2A/1A state wrestling championship at 171 pounds Saturday at Memorial Coliseum.

Dennis, seeded second, defeated top-seeded Kamren Demarce of Lowell 4-2 in the title match.

Dennis, a senior, had placed fourth, second and second in three other trips to state.

Dennis opened this year's action with a first-round pin of Oakland's Dan Jobe.

In the semi-finals, Dennis won 10-2 over third-seed Colby Jeppsen of Central Linn.

Three other Spartans competed at the meet.

Daniel Minarich reached the third-place semi-finals at 215. Minarich pinned Culver's Justin Hendrix in the first round in his first match. Minarich then lost by second-round pin to top-seeded Justin Guest of Scio in the semis.

In consolation action, Minarich lost by first-round fall to Alex Courtney of Enterprise.

Kipp Miller lost his first match at 160 by third-round fall to fourth-seeded Forrest Whiteman of Nestucca.

Miller then won his first consolation match by forfeit before losing by third-round fall to Kenneth Haworth of Crane.

Cody Powell lost 18-5 to fouth-seed Jon Thurber of Reedsport at 152. Powell then lost 6-2 to top-seed Kyle Riggs in consolation action.

Pine-Eagle finished ninth i th eteam standings with 28 points. Culver won the team title with 141.5 points.
