Baker girls top Roosevelt

By Gerry Steele, The Baker City Herald

PORTLAND - Victories have been hard to come by this season for the Baker girls. But, they've been harder to reach for Roosevelt.

Saturday, in a Class 4A play-in basketball game, Baker jumped out early and wet on to take a 42-27 win over the Lady Roughriders. The win improved Baker's record to 5-17, and ended Roosevelt's season at 1-18.

The win also sends Baker back to the Portland area Saturday for a Class 4A first-round game against top-ranked La Salle Prep (24-0).

The winner of that game then meets the winner of Saturday's Mazama-Tillamook game at 1:30 p.m. March 8 at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis.

Saturday, Baker jumped out to an 11-0 lead midway through the first period.

Jessi Stephens led the way with four points. Ashley Trees added three, Alyssa Ward two, and Marley Robb two.

Trees and Robb each added three-point baskets, and Shasta Overton a two-pointer later in the quarter to help the Bulldogs take an 18-3 edge at the break.

Emily Smith added five second-quarter points as the Bulldogs increased their lead to 27-10 at halftime.

The teams then played evenly in the second half with Baker taking the win.

Robb led Baker with 10 points.
