Siletz Valley boys win

Siletz Valley celebrated its return to the state tournament Wednesday afternoon when it took the lead for good with 4:08 remaining in the game and slipped past Damascus Christian 65-60 in the quarter-final round of the Class 1A boys basketball tournament at Baker High School.

Trailing 55-53, Jake Carr hit a three-point basket to give the Warriors a 56-55 edge.

Siletz Valley then outscored Damascus Christian 9-2 until the final buzzer to earn the right to meet Mountain West foe McKenzie in Friday's semifinals at 3:15 p.m.

Damascus Christian played Elkton in the consolation round Thursday morning.

Damascus Christian had several attempts to tie or regain the lead in the final 2 minutes. But the Eagles were just 2-of-10 from the field during that stretch, and 0-for-2 from the free throw line.

A pair of baskets by Erick Rice, and five free throws by Carr gave Siletz Valley the margin it needed.

Damascus Christian rode the eight points of Eric Rauch to a quick 10-4 lead in the first quarter. The Eagles still led 14-11 at the break.

A three-point basket by Dakota Burgins and a two-pointer by Rice gave Siletz Valley a 16-14 lead 30 seconds into the second period.

The teams traded the lead the rest of the half with Damascus Christian holding a 28-26 edge at halftime.

The pattern continued in the third quarter, with neither team able to gainmore than a 5-point advantage. Siletz Valley led 50-47 at the break.

Five points by Bobbie Waldie, and three by Rauch, gave Damascus Christian its final lead, 55-53 with 4:28 left. Twenty seconds later Carr turned the tables.

Rice led Siletz Valley with 30 points and 14 rebounds. Carr added 14 points.

Rauch topped Damascus Christian with 24 points. Matt Young added 14.
