Siletz Valley wins 1A boys crown

The drought is over.

Before this year Siletz Valley High School had not played in a state basketball tournament for 36 years.

Saturday, the Warriors put a successful closer to that drought by defeating The Triad 70-56 to win the 2011 Class 1A state boys tournament at Baker High School. Both teams were playing in their first Classs 1A championship game.

Along the way, Siletz Valley (22-5) defeated Mountain West foe, McKenzie, for the first time in four meetings to reach the title game.

Saturday, the Warriors were in a fast-paced matchup against The Triad (23-5), a semi-final winner over Horizon Christian.

Siletz Valley rode six points from Jake Carr and three from Austin Lancaster to a 12-9 lead after one quarter.

Then, leading 19-12 in the second quarter, the Warriors went cold allowing The Triad to take a 20-19 edge midway through the period.

Four points from Garrett Powless and two each fro Austin McGrew and Thomas Holland sparked an 8-0 Triad run.

But Siletz Valley got back on track, thanks in part to four more points from Carr, to take a 31-27 halftime advantage.

The Warriors then used eight points from Carr and four each from Dakota Burgins and Lancaster to build themargin to 52-42 entering the fourth quarter.

Erick Rice then took over, scoring 11 of his 22 points in the fourth period for the Warriors. The closest The Triad could get the rest of the way was seven points.

Carr led Siletz Valley with 27 points and three steals. Rice added 22 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Powless topped The Triad with 27 points and eight rebounds. Gabe Ovgard added 10 points.
