La Salle ends Baker girls season

By Gerry Steele, The Baker City Herald

MILWAUKIE - La Salle Prep is ranked No. 1 and is undefeated for a reason.

Baker found that out Saturday in the opening round of the Class 4A state girls basketball playoffs. The Falcons flew out of the gate and rolled past Baker 70-26.

Brittaney Niebergall scored four points, Carlyn Chavez three, and Mary Olarte two as La Salle (26-0) built a 9-0 lead less thana minute into the game.

"They kind of came out and shocked us," said Baker coach Tim Smith.

"It was just exactly what I had hoped wouldn't happen. Their guards, particularly their point guard, put a lot of pressure on us. We didn't handle that pressure well."

Baker (5-18) didn't get its first basket, by Alyssa Ward, until more than two minutes had elapsed in the period.

La Salle ended the quarter leading 26-3, and led 44-11 at halftime.

"I told the girls at halftime, this is gut check time," Smith said.

He said the officials were letting the teams play, and it got physical on the floor.

"I told the girls if they're going to let you play, get in there and do it," Smith said.

"Thegirls were just not use to playing that physical 'rat ball' style."

Smith said the Bulldogs adapted fairly well, and played a better second half.

"I think we played very well in the second half," he said. "The girls hung in there. I tol dthem we have to learn from it. It was a valuable learning experience. It was a good end to our season, getting a couple of wins in a row and then playing a tough team like La Salle."

Jessi Stephens led Baker with eight points.
