Spartans take third, head to state

HALFWAY - Pine-Eagle qualified for the Class 1A state volleyball tournament Saturday, placing third at the Old Oregon League district tournament at La Grande.

The Spartans defeated Cove 23-25, 25-9, 25-18, 13-25, 15-6 in the third-place match.

Devri McNeal led the Spartans with 15 kills, three solo blocks and a block assist.

Maddison Thatcher added 10 kills, three solo blocks and four block assists.

Chelsie Gulick had nine kills, a solo block and four block assists. Randee Koski had 32 assists and two ace serves.

Pine-Eagle opened district play by defeating Joseph 25-16, 25-14, 25-14.

McNeal had a dozen kills, Thatcher six kills and Koski 21 assists.

In the semifinals, Pine-Eagle lost to Imbler 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 27-25.

Thatcher had 14 kills and four blocks, McNeal 12 kills and two solo blocks, Gulick eight kills and Koski 27 assists and two kills.

Koski and Thatcher were named to the all-tournament team.

Pine-Eagle travels to Dufur Wednesday in the first round of state action. The time was not available.

Spectator admission is $6 adults and $4 students.
