Bulldog grapplers second at GU

By Gerry Steele, The Baker City Herald

Baker opened its high school wrestling season Saturday by placing second at the Grant Union Invitational at John Day.

The Bulldogs finished with 109 points, second only to Mac-Hi's 115.

"We had a pretty good weekend," said Baker coach Brandon Young.

"We were led by seniors Brandon Zunino and Sam Pearson."

Zunino placed second at 170 pounds, and Pearson second at 195. Both lost by decision in the championship matches.

Young noted that the tournament was smaller than in past years.

"The good thing about that was that we were able to set up extra exhibition matches for a few of our kids," he said.

Young said several of the Bulldogs - in particular Thomas Larsen, Chaz Lowry and Lane Zacharias - showed the effects of off-season training.

"Some of the kids showed what hard work in the off-season can do for you," Young said.

Young said Henry Shaw (220) and newcomer Tyson Walton (285) also wrestled well.

Baker travels to La Grande Friday and Saturday for the annual Muilenberg tournament.
