Weiser tops Baker girls

Combine the toughest opponent of the young season with the coldest shooting night of the season and it makes a night to forget.

That's what happened to Baker Friday in its non-league girls basketball game with Weiser on the Baker floor.

Baker (0-3) shot just 16 percent from the field (5-of-31) on the way to dropping a 56-16 loss to the Wolverines.

"This was by far the best team we've played this season," said Scott Thatcher, Baker assistant coach. (Head coach Tim Smith was out of town due to another school commitment.)

"We had some shots that were half way down then popped out," Thatcher said.

Baker opened the game without a field goal for 14 minutes. The Bulldogs managed three free throws in the first quarter, and trailed 17-3 at the break.

Baker scored just one more point in the first six minutes of the second period, trailing 26-4.

Michelle Birkmaier finally got Baker's first basket, on a rebound, with 2:01 left in the first half.

The Bulldogs trailed 32-8 at halftime.

Baker's offense remained in the deep freeze in the third period. The Bulldogs managed just one point until Birkmaier and Abi Smith hit back-to-back baskets in the final minute of the quarter.

Thatcher said the girls continue to learn.

"The girls have an idea where they need to be. They just have to figure out how to get there," he said.

"We just need to keep working to get better."

Baker travels to Burns Tuesday.
