Pine-Eagle's boys basketball team has struggled for wins in recent years, but this year Coach David Mader is hoping for that scenario to improve.

"We're enormously improved from last year," Mader said.

"I think these kids have the ability to compete. It's my job to get them to believe that."

Leading the Spartans is 6-foot-3 senior Joe Akers an Old Oregon League honorbale mention pick a year ago.

"He has shown quiet leadership. he is a complete player," Mader said. "He's a good shooter, and can post up."

Juniors Yancy Walker and Alex Stiles and sophomore Colter Marks also return.

The rest of the squad consists of Josh Minarich, Tyler Swan, and freshmen Jeff Swanson, Jon Thorn and Tanner Hamby.

"We want to run, and we'll press," Mader said.

"If we run it will be off of our defense. We're working hard on our half-court offense. We need everybody to be able to score for it to work."
