Tough defense and balanced scoring propelled Baker to a 54-28 victory over Grant Union in a non-league girls basketball game Friday at BHS.

"We had nice scoring balance and I thought our defense was outstanding," said Baker coach Tim Smith.

"I'm just happy for the girls to finally get a win," Smith said. Baker is 1-4 on the season.

Ashley Trees led the Bulldogs with a dozen points.

"I told her that when she plays good defense, she can score off that defense," Smith said. "Tonight she did."

Baker struggled out of the gate, leading just 6-4 after one quarter.

But, then the Bulldogs got rolling. Baker outscored the Lady Prospectors 17-3 in the second quarter. Trees scored eight of those points.

Baker then outscored Grant Union 31-21 in the second half.

"We had a slow start, but then scored in double figures the final three quarters," Smith said.

"We had 17, 15 and 16. I'll take that any night," he said.

Smith played his entire roster, and all but two players scored.

"It was good to see our younger girls get in and play a little bit too," Smith said.

Baker hosts Burns Wednesday afternoon.
