Powder girls win La Grande title

LA GRANDE - Powder Valley swept three girls basketball games Dec. 21-23 to win the championship at the Optimist Club Holiday Classic at La Grande High School.

The Lady Badgers defeated Weston-McEwen 47-40 in the championship game. Powder topped Echo 48-35 and Pilot Rock 52-49 to reach the title game.

Championship

Powder Valley 47, Weston-McEwen 40

Powder Valley jumped out to a 12-3 lead after one period and held Weston-McEwen off.

"We played a really consistent game," said Powder coach Allen Bingham.

"We controlled the tempo. It was the best overall game we've played this season."

Jessica Pedro led the Badgers with 14 points. Alexandra Colton added 13 points, and Ali Abrego 10.

Powder Valley 52, Pilot Rock 49

The Badgers started strong, jumping to a 22-10 lead after one quarter.

"It was just the opposite of the day before," Bingham said. "We started really strong. Our shots were dropping and we got a lot of steals and takeaways."

Pedro again led Powder with 17 points. Abrego added 14 points, and Colton 12.

Powder Valley 48, Echo 35

Powder started slowly in the game that tipped off at 8 a.m.

The Badgers trailed 14-5 after one period, but pulled within 23-21 at halftime. Powder then outscored Echo 24-12 in the second half.

"It was an 8 a.m. game and it looked like it," Bingham said. "We got good shots but they weren't falling."

Pedro topped the Badgers with 14 points. Jessi Stephens added 12. Abrego and Colton each scored 10.

Pedro and Colton were named to the all-tournament team.
