JOSEPH - Baker wrestlers placed fourth in the team standings Saturday at the annual J-Hi wrestling tournament.
Seven Bulldogs placed in their weight divisions, with six of those wrestlers advancing to the semifinals.
"We were only four points out of second place after the first day," said Baker coach Brandon Young.
"With six kids in the semifinals we had a good shot. We should have won three of those matches, but instead we only got one."
That one was sophomore Thomas Larsen, who placed second at 113 pounds.
"He stepped it up and won a real dog fight by a score of 8-7 over Daniel Colton of Union," Young said.
"In the finals Thomas really went after it. That's the hardest I've ever seen Thomas go. He canceled some takedowns and scrambled for position before losing by fall to Noe Gonzalez of Culver."
Young said Lane Zacharias and Henry Shaw also stepped up by wrestling up a weight class to try for more Baker team points.
Zacharias placed fifth at 195 despite weighing in at 180. Shaw placed sixth at 220 while weighing just 190.
Brandon Zunino (170) and Sam Pearson (182) each placed third, and Tyson Walton (285) fourth. Chaz Lowry (152) placed sixth.
"Chaz Lowry upset the No. 4 seed Nick Tewalt of Pomeroy making it to the semifinals," Young said.
"Chaz is going to bring it, and he is a little hornery. He wins quite a few of his matches just by being tough."
Young said a couple of more wins, and a few more wrestlers - some Bulldogs were ineligible - could have made a difference.
Baker travels to Payette Tuesday for dual matches against the Pirates and Emmett.
113 - 2. Larsen, 2-1. 138 - Poe, 1-2. 152 - 6. Lowry, 3-2. 160 - Hertel, 1-3; Baker 0-3. 170 - 3. Zunino, 3-1. 182 - 3. Pearson, 3-1. 195 - 5. Zacharias, 2-2. 220 - 6. Shaw, 2-3. 285 - 4. Walton, 1-2.
