Pine-Eagle split two games during the opening weekend of Old Oregon League girls basketball action last weekend.

The Spartans (1-1 in the OOL) lost a heartbreaker at home to Powder Valley, 37-33 on Friday. Pine-Eagle then bounced back to defeat Joseph 68-31 Saturday at Halfway.

Pine-Eagle had several shots go almost all the way down into the basket then pop back out against the Badgers.

"We had so many shots go in and come back out," said Pine-Eagle coach Roger Gulick.

"Then we missed five free throws in the last minute of the game. It was still a 1-point game with 20 seconds left, then we had to foul and they made a couple of free throws for the final margin."

Pine-Eagle jumped out to a 13-4 lead after one period only to have Powder Valley take a 21-16 halftime edge.

"We got after it out of the gate," Gulick said. "They didn't do anything in the first quarter, and we didn't do anything in the second quarter."

Powder still led 30-28 entering the final period.

"It was just a really good game all around," Gulick said. "We figured if we played each other 10 times each team would probably win five."

The Spartans received an added bonus when Jamie Butler returned to the court. Butler had torn her ACL during the preseason and wasn't expected to be able to play any more.

"She showed up at practice and I asked what are you doing here," Gulick said. "She said I'm here to play. I called mom and dad and they said let her play and work her hard."

Gulick said doctors said the injury is such that playing with it won't hurt it any worse. He said Butler, who will be fitted with a brace this week, hopes to be able to finish basketball season and play softball this spring before having surgery later in the spring.

"She was probably 80 percent, but boy what a whirlwind," Gulick said. "She was a little stiff when she got knocked down, but she hasn't played in three weeks."

Chelsie Gulick and Bri Thatcher each scored 11 points to lead Pine-Eagle.

Alexandra Colton led Powder Valley with 12 points. Jessica Pedro added 10.
