Pine-Eagle girls split

Pine-Eagle evened its Old Oregon League girls basketball record at 2-2 last weekend by splitting a pair of games.

The Spartans traveled to Wallowa Friday, losing 45-41. Pine-Eagle rebounded at home Saturday, topping Imbler 51-42.

"I was happy with the weekend, but could have been happier," said Pine-Eagle coach Roger Gulick.

Pine-Eagle led 10-8 after one quarter, then scored just three points in the second period.

"We've lost three games this year and in those games we've scored zero, 4 and 3 points in the second quarter," Gulick said.

The Spartans trailed by 14 points with six minutes left in the game. But with 1:36 left, Pine-Eagle had cut that deficit to one point.

"Elise Terjeson came in and lit the place up defensively," Gulick said.

"The kids came back. They battled hard.

"We panicked on offense early in the game. We were getting in a hurry. But to come back on those guys, I was happy with that."

Bri Thatcher led Pine-Eagle with 18 points. Maddie Thatcher added 11.

"We played a well rounded game," Gulick said. "We got right in their face and they couldn't handle it."

Lena Carr got Pine-Eagle rolling with a pair of quick baskets.

"Carr hit two 18-foot jump shots the first two times down the floor and away we went," Gulick said.

Chelsie Gulick, who was held to two points against Wallowa, led the Spartans with 21 points. Included in that total was an 11-of-15 effort from the free throw line.
