Baker played one of its better games Friday, but still had too many ups and downs, losing 54-38 at La Grande in a Greater Oregon League girls basketball game.

"It was a great effort," said Baker coach Tim Smith.

"It was probably our best game in terms of effort. I thought our girls made the maximum effort."

The Bulldogs fell behind 9-0 to start the game, but battled back.

Baker (0-2 in the GOL) trailed 12-5 after one period, but started the second quarter on an 8-1 run to tie the game at 13-13 with 6:08 left in the half.

Shasta Overton scored four points, and Marley Robb and Ashley Trees two each in the run.

La Grande then answered with a 12-2 run of its own to finish the half leading 25-15 at halftime.

"We fell behind 9-0 and we could have folded," Smith said.

"But we didn't. It was a good effort to get back into the game."

A major thorn in Baker's side was La Grande's Lauren Mills. She scored just one field goal, but finished 18-for-24 from the free throw line for 20 points.

"We couldn't keep her off the line," Smith said. "But still this was a win for us mentally."

Robb led Baker with 14 points.
