Vale beats Baker girls

By Gerry Steele / The Baker City Herald

Baker continued to have too many lulls in its game Saturday, losing a nonleague girls basketball game 48-27 at Vale.

"The game wasn't as bad as the score looks," said Baker coach Tim Smith.

"It was a 10-14-point game in the second half. Then I started substituting to get some of the other girls into the game in the fourth quarter and Vale scored a few baskets on us then.

"But, just like Friday at La Grande, we can't have so many ups and downs," Smith said.

"The difference against Vale really was second chance opportunities for them."

Smith said Baker only had 14 rebounds, and unofficially he thought Vale "probably doubled us on the boards."

Baker led 7-5 after one quarter, but was outscored 16-6 in the second period to trail 21-13 at halftime.

Ashley Trees led the Bulldogs with 10 points.

Baker travels to John Day Tuesday for another nonleague game against Grant Union. The Bulldogs then return to Greater Oregon League play Saturday at Mac-Hi.
