Baker girls get first GOL win

By Gerry Steele, The Baker City Herald

Baker finally broke into the win column in the Greater Oregon League girls basketball standings Tuesday, after stopping Mac-Hi 55-26 at Milton-Freewater.

The win lifts Baker's GOL record to 1-4 and the Bulldogs' overall mark to 4-13.

Baker led the Pioneers just 17-12 at halftime, then outscored Mac-Hi 23-5 in the third quarter to break the game open.

Ashley Trees came off the bench to leadf Baker with 22 points, 17 in the second half and 12 in the third period.

"We got off the bus a little slower than we should have," said Baker coach Tim Smith.

"But after the first quarter I thought the girls played better basketball."

A three-point basket by Emily Smith helped Baker build its lead to 10 points, 22-12, two minutes into the second half.

The Bulldogs then kep the margin in that range until scoring the final 12 points in the third quarter to lead 40-17 at the break.

"That third quarter was definitely the difference in the ball game," Coach Smith said.

"After halftime I thought we played pretty well although at times it was still a little bit helter skelter.

"Ashley Trees came off th ebench and played really well," Smith said.

Smith said a defensive change after halftime also worked well for the Bulldogs.

"Defensively we went to a man-to-man in the second half," he said.

"That really changed some things."

One thing it changed was Mac-Hi's offensive output. The Pioneers scored just 14 second-half points, and made just two field goals after halftime.

Smith said Baker also shot the ball well from beyond the three-point arc.

Trees and Smith each hit three "threes" in the game.

Baker will get another shot at Mac-Hi Friday when the Bulldogs host the Pioneers at BHS. Action will begin at 3 p.m. with the girls junior varsity game.
