Bulldogs conquer Vikings

By Gerry Steele, The Baker City Herald

Baker seems to be peaking at just the right time.

The Bulldogs, 9-2 in their last 11 games, stormed past Umatilla 66-35 in a nonleague boys basketball game Saturday at BHS.

"It was a good team effort," said Baker coach Joel Richardson.

"We wanted to really push the tempo, but I thought we were tired from back-to-back nights so we went about 75 percent on our pressure.

"Offensively we worked the ball inside and outside. It was a good overall effort," Richardson said.

Braden Phillips, who scored 30 points a night earlier against Ma-Hi, got the Bulldogs rolling with nine points in the first quarter Saturday.

With the score tied 5-5 the Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run to take the lead for good. Dillon Blankenship led the spurt with a pair of baskets. Jordan Curtis added three points, and Colten Richards two.

Baker led 18-11 at the break.

The teams traded baskets to start the second quarter before Baker went on a 10-0 run.

Phillips scored four of those points. Curtis, Blankenship, and Trent Taylor each added two.

Baker went on to double up the Vikings, 38-19, at halftime.

The Bulldogs maintained that margin through the third period which ended with Baker on top 50-29.

Blankenship hit a three-pointer near the end of the third quarter that started the Bulldogs on an 11-0 run, including the first eight points of the fourth quarter.

Phillips scored the first six points in the fourth period, and Jake Grammon completed the run with a layin.

Phillips and Blankenship each tallied 19 points to lead Baker. Curtis added 13.

Baker outrebounded the Vikings 43-21. Phillips completed a "double-double" with 10 rebounds. Curtis added seven, Thomas Hamilton six and Richards six.

"We want to maintain the one-and-done attitude," Richardson said.

"Once we're done with league play that's what it's going to be in the playoffs."
