Pine-Eagle didn't want to play Thursday at the District 7-1A girls basketball tournament.
So, the Spartans did what they had to last weekend to get an extra day of rest before opening tournament action at 12:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of Thursday's Wallowa-Joseph game.
Pine-Eagle defeated Wallowa 52-47 in a playoff game Saturday at Imbler to earn the No. 2 seed at district. The teams had tied for second place in the Old Oregon League regular season standings.
The Spartans pulled into that tie by defeating Cove 40-32 Friday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Against Wallowa, senior Chelsie Gulick got the ball rolling, scoring 11 of her game-high 28 points in the first quarter.
"She went at everything," said Pine-Eagle coach Roger Gulick.
"That was probably the best all-around game I've seen her play. The rest of the girls got on the wagon and went with her."
Pine-Eagle led 14-13 after one quarter and 24-19 at halftime. The Spartans still led 39-35 entering the fourth quarter.
The Spartans then hit 11-of-12 free throws in the final quarter. Gulick and Jamie Butler combined to go 8-for-8 in the last two minutes.
"It was a good, solid game," Coach Gulick said.
"It kind of woke us up."
Gulick was referring to how the Spartans rebounded after an emotional senior night Friday at home against Cove.
"I started all of my seniors because it was senior night," he said. "The girls were so emotional. They'd been crying all day because it was their last home game."
Gulick said that when he finally put his regular starters in the game midway through the first quarter the Spartans led just 2-0.
"We just couldn't get anything going," he said. "There was no heart beat in the system."
Pine-Eagle led just 12-9 after one quarter and 15-13 at halftime.
Gulick said it was still just a three-point game midway through the fourth quarter when he decided to spread the floor.
"Cove didn't come out when we spread the fllor. I thought hey you guys are behind, but they didn't come out. My girls wanted to do something, but I told them just to stay outside," Gulick said.
Gulick again led the Spartans with 14 points. Bri Thatcher added 11.
