Pine-Eagle advanced to the second round of the Class 1A state girls basketball playoffs Tuesday with a 55-46 victory over Crane at Halfway.

The Spartans (22-5) now travel to Ione Friday for a 7 p.m. second-round contest. The winner of that game advances to the Class 1A tournament Feb. 29-March 3 at Baker High School.

"It was a typical game between us and Stub (Crane coach Stub Travis)," said Pine-Eagle coach Roger Gulick.

"We just wore them down in the first half. They could hardly walk into th elocker room.

"Then they got their second wind i nthe second half. They came out in the third quarter and banked in a couple of three-pointers. I'm getting awefully tired of teams banking in three-pointers on us," Gulick said.

Pine-Eagle led 10-6 after one quarter and 26-16 at halftime.

Despite the long balls the Spartans added to their lead in the third period to take a 39-25 edge into the final quarter.

Crane made one final run at the Spartans, closing to within seven in the final period but could get no closer.

Pine-Eagle was 9-of-14 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

"I'm just really happy and th ekids are tickled," Gulick said.

"They were saying we've never been this far into the playoffs before. The kids just stepped in up."

Bri Thatcher led the Spartans with 19 points. Chelsie Gulick and Maddison Thatcher each added 16 points.

Pine-Eagle and Ione have met before this season, in the opening game of the Ione tournament back in December. Ione won that meeting 51-35.

"We've got a huge battle coming up in Ione. We're going to have to play a solid game to beat them," Gulick said. "But they're going to have to do the same to beat us."
