Baker broke a Greater Oregon League boys soccer winless streak that was at least two years old Thursday.

The Bulldogs defeated Ontario 2-0 in the GOL match at the Baker Sports Complex for their first league win of the season and their first since at least 2010.

"All the kids played together," said Baker coach Victor Benites.

"They were moving well, talking and passing the ball well to each other.

"I think we kind of surprised Ontario. I don't think they thought we would give them much of a game."

The teams battled to a scoreless first half.

But Baker made its shots count after halftime.

Riley Carter got Baker on the scoreboard early in the half when he broke ahead of the pack, twisted away from a defender, then kicked the ball past the Ontario keeper for a 1-0 lead.

A few minutes later Baker went up 2-0 when Matthew Barnes scored on a rebound off a Bulldog free kick, placing the ball into the lower left corner of the net.

Baker's defense then took over.

"Moving Noe (Benites), Fernando (Jimenez), (Isaac) Alanko and Ivan (Hansen) on the defensive side creates problems for the other team," Benites said.

Baker keeper Levi Mansuetti also was stellar in goal.

"Levi is doing a really good job for being a rookie," the Baker coach said.
