Three Baker players scored in double figures Saturday as the Bulldogs handed Payette a 50-41 nonleague boys basketball defeat at Payette.

Baker (1-0) was led by Dillon Blankenship's 22 points. Braden Phillips added 12, and Mason Cline 10.

"For our first game we were still trying to get our offense rolling," said Baker coach Joel Richardson.

"I was really pleased with the way we played for having so few practices. It was a gutty performance by our guys on defense."

Most of the Baker roster has seen little court time because they were playing, and winning, the Class 4A state football title just a week ago.

"It was a darn good effort by the kids considering the short practice time," Richardson said.

"Dillon did a great job scoring and playing defense. Dane Bachman played some good defense. Mason Cline played really well. He was tired, but that was to expected. And, Grayson Swiger made some good plays inside. He had a couple of big buckets in the third quarter when Dillon found him inside."

Baker led 14-8 after one period, and 26-18 at halftime.

The Bulldogs maintained their edge in the second half. Payette managed to cut the deficit to six points in the fourth quarter, but Baker then held the Pirates off the rest of the way.

Baker shot 50 percent from the field (20 of 40).

The Bulldogs return to the road Tuesday when they travel to Fruitland. Baker plays its first home game Friday when the Bulldogs host Weiser.

Baker also won Saturday's junior varsity and frosh/soph games.
