Baker tuned up for tonight's Greater Oregon League opener with a 56-42 nonleague boys basketball win at Nyssa Thursday.

Baker (5-3) travels to Ontario to open GOL play tonight.

Baker outscored Nyssa 33-19 in the second half to break a 23-23 halftime deadlock.

"It was a good team effort," said Baker coach Joel Richardson.

"The kids played real good defense, and we were really balanced on the boards."

Baker outrebounded Nyssa 35-18. Dillon Blankenship, Dane Bachman and Mason Cline each grabbed seven rebounds. Jake Grammon added six.

"It was really nice to have our three guards in on the boards," Richardson said.

The Baker coach noted that he had to use several different player combinations in the game because starters Braden Phillips and Ben Baxter were missing due to the flu.

"The kids played really scrappy, and were tough on the glass," Richardson said.

Baker broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Nyssa 18-8.

The Bulldogs committed a season-low eight turnovers.

"We continue to take better care of the basketball," Richardson said.

The Baker coach was pleased with the play of many of his players.

"Dillon had a great night shooting the ball. We got some really good minutes out of Trent Taylor who came off the bench and played great defense. We got some great minutes out of Thomas Hamilton, and Grayson Swiger stepped up well inside with Braden out. Mason Cline did a great job rebounding and did so many other little things that helped us," Richardson said.

Blankenship led Baker with 29 points.
