Baker wrestlers finished 2-3 at the Homedale dual tournament Saturday.

One Baker win and one loss actually were team ties, but the winners were awarded wins due to tie-breaking criteria.

Baker tied Timberline 36-36, but was awarded the team win for having more pins than Timberline.

Baker tied Boise 42-42, but lost the team score because Boise had more pins.

Baker lost 48-9 to Homedale, 51-18 to Emmett, and defeated the Renegades 48-18.

"We started out a little flat Saturday morning against Homedale and Emmett," said Baker coach Brandon Young.

"Homedale had a full lineup and shifted several of their better kids so they would wrestle and have their least experienced kids take forfeits.

"It's a little overkill when we gave them 24 points, but it's all part of the game," Young said.

The Baker coach said the Bulldogs put up little fight against Emmett, which was a surprise because Baker had lost to the Huskies earlier in a dual that had gone to the wire.

Young said several Bulldogs wrestled well.

"Josh Valentine wrestled very well at 126 and transitioned from one move to the next," Young said.

Valentine finished the day 4-1.

"Taylor Hawes wrestled tough all weekend and had some close matches," Young said.

Hawes (138), a freshman, finished 1-4.

"Henry Shaw went 4-1 on the day and lost a 5-4 decision to McCain of Homedale," Young said. "He earned a win by fall over Mac-Hi's Harmon."

Young said heavyweight William Pifher "got a couple of head and arms and continues to improve."

Baker travels to La Grande today for a junior varsity match.

The Baker varsity travels to Ontario Thursday for dual matches against Ontario and New Plymouth.

The Baker Middle School squad will host a tournament Friday at BHS beginning at 9 a.m.
