A team can't win many basketball games when they don't score many points.

That was a problem for the Baker girls a year ago, and it came back to bite the Bulldogs Thursday evening in their nonleague home opener against Weiser.

The Bulldogs (0-1) shot just 26 percent from the field (9-of-35) while dropping a 40-26 contest.

"We have a hard time putting the ball in the hole," said Baker coach Jenny Mowe-Joseph.

"We've just got to find some scoring."

Despite shooting just 2-of-17 in the first half the Bulldogs trailed just 17-10 at halftime thanks to the free throw line.

It wasn't that Baker shot free throws well - finishing just 8-of-20 for the game - but the Bulldogs didn't get their first field goal until just 4:06 remained in the first half.

"We had a hard time getting into our offense," the Baker coach said. "We're still having a tough time getting into our offense."

The Bulldogs finished with 29 turnovers.

Baker's best quarter was the third, scoring 10 points to equal its first-half output. Whitney Lemmon scored six of her team-high nine points in the period.

"Talk about a player that's got some grit," Mowe-Joseph said. "Someimes it takes her a while to get going but she plays hard inside."

Baker doesn't have time to sulk about Thursday's outcome. The Bulldogs travel to Elgin for a two-day tournament beginning today. Baker opened play at noon against Vale.

Baker split Thursday's novarsity games, winning the JV game 40-37 but losing the frosh/soph game 33-7.
