PAYETTE - Baker evened its preseason boys basketball record at 1-1 Saturday after defeating Payette 55-51 in a nonleague contest.

Baker jumped to a double-digit first-half lead then held Payette off in the second half for the win.

"We got off the bus really well," said Baker coach Joel Richardson.

"We didn't shoot the ball well from the perimeter, but took care of the basketball. I was really pleased with the way we responded after losing our opener to Vale."

Baker forged a 27-15 halftime lead. Payette battled back to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but Baker managed to regain the lead for good.

"We started trading free throws for baskets," Richardson said.

"Kyle Srack got a steal and was fouled near the end of the fourth quarter. He made both free throws to give us a comfortable lead."

Baker was 21-of-28 from the free throw line in the game, 18-of-21 in the second half.

Mason Cline led Baker with 25 points - including 15-of-20 from the free throw line - and eight rebounds.

Srack added 14 points and four rebounds.

Baker committed just 13 turnovers in the game.

The Bulldogs (1-1) travel to Fruitland Tuesday.
