Baker played solid defense for 24 minutes against Fruitland Saturday.

But it was the other eight minutes that made the difference.

Baker held the Grizzlies to 23 points in three quarters, but allowed 22 points in the third period on the way to losing the nonleague girls basketball game 45-21 on the BHS floor.

Fruitland's Makenna Little and Brook Teuaissen combined to score 13 of their 20 points in the quarter.

Baker trailed just 15-10 at halftime before the Grizzlies blew the game open in the third period.

Baker, as it has all season, struggled offensively.

The Bulldogs shot just 22 percent from the field (9-of-41) and 23 percent from the free throw line (3-of-13).

"We just can't put the ball in the hole," said Baker coach Jenny Mowe-Joseph.

"We're getting open shots. They're just not going into the basket."

Baker trailed 7-1 six minutes into the game before baskets by Allie Brown and Summer Phillips pulled the Bulldogs to within 9-5 at the break.

A free throw by Emily Tatlock and rebound basket by Erin Bachman got Baker to within 9-8 early in the second quarter.

A basket by Michelle Freese later in the quarter got the Bulldogs to within 11-10, but that was as close as they would get.

Fruitland closed the first half with four straight points, and opened the third period with six more to build a 21-10 cushion.

Then, after Freese hit another basket, the Grizzlies ran off 13 unanswered points to close the door.

Whitney Lemmon led Baker with five points.

Baker split the preliminary games Saturday. The Bulldogs won the junior varsity game 34-29, but lost the frosh/soph game 30-27.

Baker (1-6) travels to Melba, Idaho, Tuesday.
