A low-scoring first quarter proved to be the difference between a win and loss for Baker Thursday in a nonleague boys basketball game at Weiser. Weiser defeated the Bulldogs 61-51.

The Bulldogs scored just six points in the first period, trailing 16-6 at the break. Three-point baskets by Clay LeaMaster and Logan Sand accounted for Baker's points.

The teams battled evenly the other three quarters.

"I've always said there are 12 minutes in game that are the most important - the first four minutes of the game, the first four minutes of the second half and the final four minutes of the fourth quarter," said Baker coach Joel Richardson.

"Against Weiser we took two of three."

Richardson said the Bulldogs inability to convert on defensive stops in the first quarter was the difference.

"We weren't very capitalistic," Richardson said.

"We stopped them five straight times, but only converted one of those stops into points."

Baker managed to cut the deficit to six points with five minutes left in the game, but Weiser then pulled away to a safe lead.

Sand led Baker with 16 points, hitting 4-of-9 three-point tries.

Mason Cline added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Taylor Gulick added nine points.

"Taylor and Logan came off the bench and did a great job," Richardson said.

"Taylor played really well, and Sand shot the ball well from the perimeter."
