Free throws cost Baker boys

Hall of Fame Portland Trail Blazer broadcaster Bill Schonely said hundreds of times during broadcasts "you've got to make your free throws."

Baker boys basketball coach Joel Richardson would agree with Schonely.

Baker was just 17-of-31 from the line Saturday while losing a nonleague game to Redmond 57-48 at Prairie City.

"We were there the whole way," Richardson said.

"But, our free throw shooting was the deciding factor in the game. We were just so close, but we didn't make our free throws in clutch situations," he said.

Baker scored the first four points in the game only to have Redmond run off 11 straight points for an 11-4 lead.

Baker battled back to trail just 14-10 after one quarter.

Baker trailed by just two points, 18-16, midway through the second period before Redmond went on a 9-1 run to build its lead to 27-17.

The Panthers led 30-22 at halftime.

"We were just 13 of 23 from the free throw line in the first half," Richardson said.

"We make most or all of those misses and we could be ahead at halftime."

Redmond maintained a double-digit advantage most of the second half before Baker made one last run.

Five points from Mason Cline and three from Clay LeaMaster helped the Bulldogs pull to within 52-47 with a minute left in the game.

But, Redmond made its free throws down the stretch to hold the Bulldogs off.

Cline led Baker with 14 points. Kyle Srack added 11 points, and Aiden Hayes 10.

Baker returns to Greater Oregon League play Tuesday when the Bulldogs host Ontario.
