Baker was its own worst enemy Tuesday in a first-round Greater Oregon League district girls basketball playoff game against Mac-Hi.

The Bulldogs missed close to a dozen layins in the game at BHS but still managed to stop Mac-Hi 34-19. The win sends Baker to the second round of the playoffs at Ontario at 5 p.m. PST tonight.

The winner of tonight's game earns at least a Class 4A play-in berth and the right to play La Grande at La Grande Saturday for the league's top state berth.

"We couldn't have missed any more layins," said Baker coach Jenny Mowe-Joseph of Tuesday's win.

Missing at least a half-dozen shots from in close, Baker trailed 6-5 after one quarter.

Then, trailing 9-8 midway through the second period, the Bulldogs righted the ship.

Baker closed out the first half on a 7-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a 15-9 halftime cushion.

"That gave us some breathing room," Mowe-Joseph said.

Brie Sand then scored six of her 10 points in the third period and Baker increased its lead to 26-13.

Michelle Freese then chipped in five fourth-quarter points to help put the game away.

Sand and Freese combined for 13 second-half points.

"Brie and Michelle have really stepped up their games over the last four or five games," Mowe-Joseph said.

"They feed well off of each other."
