Baker County Tournaments signed a new four-year contract with the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) Wednesday to hold the Class 1A state boys and girls basketball tournaments at Baker High School through the 2017-18 season.
"This is the first time we've been able to work a contract for more than two years," said Dale Curtis, Baker County Tournaments chairman.
Tom Welter, OSAA executive director, said many of the OSAA's larger tournaments have contracts for multiple years.
He said the multi-year agreements work well with the OSAA's fur-year time blocks.
The new Baker City contract will coincide with the next four-year block.
"We're very comfortable with the tournaments here," Welter said during Wednesday's first day of this year's tournaments.
"Unlike in the early days we have had absolutely no negative feedback from the 1A schools," said Welter, who has been OSAA executive director the past 19 years.
"Many of our larger tournaments don't have the community support these tournament have."
"Getting a four-year contract shows the relationship we have with Tom and his staff," Curtis said.
"We're happy to have them here."
"And, we're happy to be here," Welter said.
"That makes for a good combination."
The boys tuornament has been played at Baker High School since 1974, and the girls tourney since 1978.
