Baker rallied in the final 1:41 Friday to edge Fruitland 56-52 in a nonleague boys basketball game at BHS.

It was Baker's first win of the season after two losses.

With the score knotted at 49-49 Baker's Teancum Taylor hit a basket and added two free throws to boost Baker up 53-49 with 46.5 seconds left in the game.

Sixteen seconds later Logan Sand completed a three-point play to finish a 7-0 Baker run.

Baker coach Brent Gyllenberg noted that Fruitland had much more size under the boards, but that Baker did not back down.

"As usual we're undersized," Gyllenberg said.

"But, there's is nothing undersized about these guys. They just kept battling. We're scrappy."

Baker fell behind 9-4 midway through the first quarter, but rallied to take a 20-13 lead at the break.

Sand scored five points to lead a half-dozen Bulldogs in a 16-4 quarter-ending run.

Then, leading 22-18, Baker used consecutive baskets from Taylor, Sand, TJ Dunn, Brad Zemmer and Bryson Smith to take its largest lead at 32-18 with 2:30 left in the first half.

Fruitland ended the second quarter on a 10-3 spurt to cut Baker's lead to 35-28 at halftime.

The Grizzlies then scored the first seven points of the second half to tie the game at 35-35.

Sand then scored 10 straight points to give Baker a 43-39 cushion with 1:11 left in the third quarter.

Zemmer's three-pointer with 2 seconds left in the period gave Baker a 46-41 advantage entering the final quarter.

Fruitland battled back one final time to tie the game at 49-49 with 3 minutes left. That set up Baker's final surge.

"We'll continue to build on this," Gyllenberg said.

"I'm pleased with the way these kinds weathered the storm. We could have wilted, but the kids battled hard."

Sand finished with 20 points. Taylor added nine points, seven in the fourth quarter.

Fruitland won the JV and JV2 games. The Grizzlies won the JV game 55-42, and the JV2 contest 49-40.
