Baker boys fall in overtime

JUNCTION CITY — The Baker boys basketball team lost to Junction City 69-68 in an overtime thriller Thursday in the Les Schwab Eagle Booster Classic tournament.

See Monday’s issue for a story about Thursday’s game, and about Baker’s two other tournament games.

Baker is scheduled to play Pleasant Hill today at 4:15 p.m., and Harrisburg on Saturday at 11 a.m

It was a struggle for most of the game, but Baker managed to keep its girls basketball season record unblemished Thursday.

Baker (3-0) rallied in the final 3:26 of the game to claim a 47-38 nonleague win over Nyssa on the Baker floor.

“Nyssa played a scrappy game,” said Baker coach Mat Sand. “We knew we had to play scrappy, which is our style, to play with them. We knew it would be style for style. I think it showed a lot of guts for our kids.”

Baker had several opportunities to dominate the game, but couldn’t find the basket.

“We got some great looks but our shots weren’t falling,” Sand said.

Baker jumped out to a 2-1 lead to start the first quarter, then never led again until going up 27-26 with 1:38 left in the third quarter.

In between, Baker trailed by as many as nine points, and cut the deficit to one point five times before regaining the lead.

Nyssa led 28-27 entering the fourth quarter.

Baker still trailed with 3:30 left in the game when Nyssa was assessed a technical foul for too many players on the floor.

Jayme Ramos made both free throws to tie the game at 36-36.

Kaeli Flanagan then gave Baker the lead for good with 3:08 left on a layin after a pass from Rose Gwillim.

Gwillim came off the bench in the second and fourth quarters to score a team-high 16 points for the Bulldogs.

After Flanagan’s basket, she and Gwillim scored one more basket each and Baker hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 1:23 to ice the win.

Flanagan added 14 points.

Baker completed the sweep by winning the JV game 3 8-20 and the JV2 game 34-22.

Baker hosts Homedale, Idaho, tonight.
