Bulldogs lose on late basket

PENDLETON — The Baker boys basketball team was poised to upset Class 5A Pendleton Tuesday night and avenge a season-opening loss to the Bucks.

And then the final 12 seconds happened.

Pendleton freshman Dakota Sams scored the game-winning basket to give the Bucks a 50-49 nonleague win after Baker had led the entire game.

The Bulldogs had a final chance as Gabe Gambleton, who led all scorers with 18 points, drove to the hoop and drew contact.

Baker lost 55-47 to Pendleton on Nov. 29.

The Bulldogs pushed the Bucks to the brink Tuesday despite playing without Jacob Zikmund, who is recovering from a sprained ankle. Caden Long played but was suffering from a fever.

“Everyone stepped up and played gritty defense,” Gyllenberg said. “(Dawson) Linscott and (Landon) Nelson helped out when foul trouble benched Long and (Drew) Story.”

Gambleton scored 7 of his 18 points in the first quarter as Baker took a 17-11 lead after eight minutes.

Baker maintained a modest lead into the fourth quarter.

Although Sams scored the decisive basket, Tyler Newsome led Pendleton’s comeback, scoring 10 of his team-high 17 points in the final quarter.

Cayn Osborn scored 10 points for Baker. Story and Kaden Sand had 7 each.
