Baker routs Pioneers


Celebrating senior night caused a brief misstep for the Baker girls early in their Greater Oregon League basketball game with Mac-Hi Monday.

Very brief.

Trailing 6-4 midway through the first quarter, Baker went on a 13-0 run and romped to an 84-23 win over the Pioneers in the Baker gym.

Baker, 4-0 in the GOL and 17-1 overall, nearly equalled the score of an earlier win at Milton-Freewater where Baker won 84-16.

“We started a different lineup for senior night and Mac-Hi played us scrappy,” said Baker coach Mat Sand.

Mac-Hi’s Brianna Hernandez had three early steals to give the Pioneers the 6-4 lead.

Then Kaeli Flanagan and Rose Gwillim each scored four points, Desi Davis three and Sydney Younger two as Baker built a 17-6 lead early in the second quarter.

Baker finished the half leading 32-14 before exploding in the second half.

The Bulldogs began clicking on all areas of their game, outscoring Mac-Hi 52-9 after halftime.

“We started playing the passing lanes better,” Sand said.

He noted that the Bulldogs finished with just 11 turnovers, one above their goal of 10. Baker also had 34 steals.

Jayme Ramos and Gwillim each finished with 19 points, Flanagan 17 and Davis 10.

Baker also won the JV game 61-16. Lauren Benson led Baker with 14 points.

Baker travels to Ontario Friday.
