Powder Valley won its second straight girls preseason basketball tournament Saturday, defeating Marsing, Idaho, in the title game at the Pine-Eagle Invitational at Halfway.

Powder Valley edged Marsing 40-31 for the championship. The Badgers rolled past Irrigon, a first-year program, 60-17 in the first round of action Friday.

Just well enough to win

Powder Valley didn't play its best game against Marsing, but played well enough to win.

"It was a good game," said Powder coach Allen Bingham. "We were cold in the first quarter, but so were they."

Powder led just 7-3 after one period. The Badgers then led 22-14 at halftime.

"In the second quarter we started to hit some shots and got a lead," Bingham said.

Then, after Marsing made a run in the third quarter, Powder settled down and maintained its cushion.

"A game like this gave us a chance to see if we could maintain our lead even though we weren't playing our best game," Bingham said.

Kali Miller led Powder with 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots. Hailee Bingham added seven points and six assists.

Easy romp

Powder Valley jumped to a 22-6 lead after one quarter against Irrigon and never looked back.

"Irrigon has a lot of young kids," Bingham said. "We applied some pressure early and pulled away."

Ashley Dozhier and Miller each scored 16 points to lead the Badgers.

Powder Valley opens Old Oregon League play this weekend, traveling to Cove Friday and visiting Adrian Saturday.
