Pine-Eagle defeated Irrigon 52-23 to capture third place at the Pine-Eagle Invitational girls basketball tournament Saturday at Halfway.

Pine-Eagle lost its opener Friday 39-37 to Marsing, Idaho.

Man defense leads the way

"We played man defense all night and that changed the complection of things," said Pine-Eagle coach Roger Gulick.

Britney Gulick led Pine-Eagle with 21 points, playing point guard. Jessie Baxter added 15 points, and Sarah Sciarrino 14.

Tough breaks at the end

Pine-Eagle had three chances to win the game in the final nine seconds against Marsing Friday. But, each time, the Spartans came up short.

"We took advantage of the chances. We just couldn't get them to go in," Gulick said.

Baxter led Pine-Eagle with 13 points. Gulick added 10.
