The Baker girls played well, but not well enough to win against Pendleton Friday in a non-league 59-49 loss at Pendleton.

"The girls played tough," said Baker coach Tim Smith. "Our press in the fourth quarter made it close. We just dug too deep of a hole in the first half."

The Bulldogs played without Katy Sullivan and Kial Richardson, who were both ill. But, several other Bulldogs stepped up their games in their absence.

"Kate Vaugham, Katie White and Jessie Wittich all stepped up their games in the post," Smith said.

White led Baker with 12 rebounds, and Vaughan added seven. Vaughan led Baker scorers with 14 points. White added nine and Wittich eight.

In Sullivan's absence Tano Jayo and Julia Vaughan shared point guard duties.

"Both played well," Smith said. "Julia handled the pressure very well for her first varsity game."

Smith said 35 turnovers hurt the Bulldogs. Baker forced 23 Pendleton miscues.

Baker hosts Grant Union at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
